Introduction: Home-based care for older adults with neurodegenerative diseases involves multidimensional needs that may require coordination among individuals, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and services. However, how knowledge relevant to these care dimensions is organised across the research field remains insufficiently understood.
Objective: This study aimed to map global research trends and knowledge structures in home-based care for older adults with neurodegenerative diseases and identify potential gaps in knowledge integration.
Method: A bibliometric analysis and science mapping were conducted using 315 Scopus-indexed publications published between 1994 and 2026. Data were retrieved on 8 July 2026 from an initial set of 373 records. Analyses were performed using Biblioshiny, VOSviewer, and OpenRefine to examine publication performance, conceptual and intellectual structures, research fronts, thematic development, and scientific collaboration.
Result: The dataset comprised 315 publications by 1,759 authors, with international co-authorship accounting for 21.59% of publications. Annual publication growth was 9.81%. Dementia was the most prominent keyword, followed by patient-centered care and home care. Caregiver involvement and care coordination were also represented in the conceptual network. Thematic analyses showed increasing attention to primary healthcare, palliative care, and person-centered approaches in more recent years. Holistic care appeared in the keyword network but had lower frequency and connectivity than the major concepts. Across the conceptual, intellectual, thematic, and social analyses, relevant care dimensions and research traditions were represented, but their relationships were not shown to form a coherent framework for holistic home-based care.
Conclusion: The findings suggest a potential knowledge integration gap within the mapped literature. Future research should develop and empirically evaluate a conceptual framework connecting multidimensional care needs, person-centered approaches, caregiver involvement, and coordination across home-based, primary, community, and palliative care.
