Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between levels of independence and quality of life among migrant university students at STIKes Muhammadiyah Ciamis. It specifically investigated whether higher levels of independence are significantly associated with better perceived quality of life outcomes.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at STIKes Muhammadiyah Ciamis in March–April 2025, involving 33 migrant nursing students. Data were collected via an online questionnaire comprising 70 items measuring independence and quality of life. Independence was assessed using a validated scale based on Steinberg’s theory, while quality of life was measured with the Indonesian Quality of Life Scale (KHI); both instruments showed high reliability (α = 0.869 and α = 0.880). Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 29 with descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests, with significance set at p < 0.001.

Conclusion: The study concludes that independence plays a crucial role in shaping the quality of life among migrant university students. Higher levels of independence are associated with better life satisfaction and psychological well-being. These findings highlight the importance of fostering independence in students through institutional support and life skill development, especially for those who live apart from their families during their academic journey.
