Abstrak

Introduction: The Tresna Wredha Tulus Kasih Social Home is known as a facility for the elderly that provides essential services, including food, clothing, healthcare, spiritual activities, and social engagement. Previous research involving 25 residents at the Tulus Kasih home identified their depression status as follows: 17 individuals (68%) were not depressed, 6 (24%) had mild depression, 1 (4%) had moderate depression, and 1 (4%) had severe depression.

Objective of this community service initiative was to alleviate symptoms of depression, thereby preventing them from escalating to a severe level.

Method The intervention employed an experimental approach involving modified progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) and music therapy; the program consisted of two PMR sessions, with the final session incorporating music therapy. The study population comprised 25 elderly individuals, and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) questionnaire was used as the assessment instrument. While previous research indicated effectiveness this community service program was conducted over two sessions within a single week, with each session lasting 30–60 minutes. Participants engaged in the full program, ranging from the preparatory phase to the cool-down.

Results indicated that the elderly participants enjoyed activities requiring movement even at a slow pace and participated with a relaxed yet enthusiastic attitude. Some participants reported an increase in sleep duration, rising from two hours to four hours.

Conclusion, the elderly participants felt more comfortable and were able to sleep soundly.
