Implementation of an Electric Hot Pack to Increase Body Temperature in Postoperative Patients with Hypothermia at Pandega Pangandaran Regional General Hospital

Introduction: Hypothermia is a common complication in postoperative patients due to the effects of anesthesia, particularly in patients undergoing regional or general anesthesia. Hypothermia negatively affects patient recovery, such as causing cardiovascular system disorders, increasing the risk of bleeding, and delaying the healing process. Previous studies have explored various non-pharmacological interventions to manage core body temperature drop after surgery.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to implement an electric hotpack as a non-pharmacological intervention to increase the body temperature of postoperative hypothermic patients at RSUD Pandega Pangandaran.
Method: The method used a quantitative observational design with a pre-post intervention approach involving 30 postoperative patients who experienced hypothermia (body temperature <36°C). The intervention consisted of applying an electric hotpack for 15 minutes to the back area.
Result: The results showed that the average body temperature of the patients increased from 34.5°C to 35.4°C after the intervention. Participant characteristics were dominated by males (53.3%), early adulthood (43.3%), and patients with regional anesthesia (63.3%). This temperature increase demonstrated the effectiveness of the electric hotpack in reducing the degree of hypothermia in postoperative patients.
Conclusion: The implementation of an electric hotpack is an effective alternative for non-pharmacological management that is easy, inexpensive, and practical in post-anesthesia care. Medical personnel, particularly nurse anesthetists, should utilize this intervention widely in clinical practice
