Introduction: Hypertensive emergency is a life-threatening condition characterized by severely elevated blood pressure accompanied by acute target-organ damage. Delays in recognizing warning signs and obtaining appropriate medical assistance during the prehospital phase may increase the risk of serious complications. Community education is therefore essential to improve health literacy and preparedness for early recognition and safe initial management of hypertensive emergencies.
Objective: This community service aimed to improve community knowledge and preparedness in recognizing warning signs of hypertensive emergencies, understanding safe initial management during the prehospital phase, and identifying the importance of timely emergency service activation and referral.
Method: This community service was designed as a community-based health education program entitled SIGAP HIPERTENSI, conducted by Institut Kesehatan dan Bisnis Annisa Bogor in collaboration with the local government, community health workers, and the community of Puspasari Village, Citeureup, Bogor Regency. The intervention included interactive health education, blood pressure measurement demonstrations, discussions, and case-based simulations. Knowledge was assessed using pre-test and post-test questionnaires, while participants’ understanding of appropriate initial management and referral procedures was evaluated through case scenarios and observation checklists. A simulated one-group pretest–posttest dataset involving 12 participants was used to illustrate the evaluation results.
Result: The simulated results showed an increase in the proportion of participants with good knowledge from 16.7% before education to 100% after education. Recognition of warning signs, including chest pain, acute shortness of breath, decreased consciousness, and sudden limb weakness, reached 100% in the post-test. Understanding of emergency service activation, patient safety, monitoring, avoidance of unsupervised additional medication, and timely referral also reached 100% after education. These findings illustrate the potential of structured community education to improve knowledge and preparedness for responding to suspected hypertensive emergencies.
Conclusion: The SIGAP HIPERTENSI program provides a structured approach to strengthening community health literacy and preparedness for hypertensive emergencies during the prehospital phase. Interactive education and case-based simulations may support early recognition of warning signs and appropriate help-seeking behavior. However, the reported findings are based on simulated data and must be confirmed through actual program implementation and evaluation
