Introduction: Behavior problems in children (tantrum, aggressive, etc), are commonly encountered in daily life. Parents tend to apply discipline patterns based on punishment, which may have negative long-term effects on child development. Health cadres have the potential as agents of change through parenting education. However, most cadres have not yet received training on positive reinforcement, resulting in suboptimal performance of their role in this area.
Objective: The aim was to improve the knowledge and skills of health cadres in applying positive reinforcement in child-rearing practices.
Method: This community service activity was conducted at the Bandungrejosari Village Hall, on June 3–5, 2026 (three meetings) involving 45 health cadres from Bandungrejosari Village, Malang City. The program consisted of education and training sessions covering topics: parenting styles, behavior management, and positive reinforcement. The empowerment methods used included lectures, discussions, and simulation/role play. The community team used questionnaire to evaluate the knowledge, and observation sheet to evaluate cadres’ skill. The pre and post-test score were calculated, and categorized using N-Gain score.
Result: The results showed an increase in cadres’ knowledge with an average N-Gain score of 0.75 (high category), as well as an improvement in skills in applying positive reinforcement with an N-Gain score of 0.70 (high category).
Conclusion: The training effectively enhanced the competencies of health cadres. Its effectiveness was attributed to the use of an interactive role-play approach and training materials tailored to the participants' needs.
