Introduction: Febrile seizures and choking are common pediatric emergencies that require immediate and appropriate first aid to prevent serious complications and reduce unnecessary emergency department visits. Community health volunteers are essential in providing early assistance and health education within the community.
Objective: This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and practical skills of community health volunteers regarding the recognition and initial management of febrile seizures and choking in children.
Method: A three-session training program involving 45 community health volunteers in Bandungrejosari Subdistrict, Malang City, was conducted using lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on simulations. Program effectiveness was evaluated through attendance records, pretest–posttest assessments, Normalized Gain (N-Gain) analysis, and observation checklists.
Result: Attendance reached 100%. The mean knowledge score increased from 82.4 to 94.8, with an N-Gain score of 0.80. Mean practical skill scores were 92.4 for febrile seizure management and 86.7 for choking management.
Conclusion: The training effectively enhanced participants' knowledge and first-aid skills, supporting the capacity of community health volunteers to provide appropriate initial management of pediatric emergencies and strengthen community-based emergency preparedness.
